Arriving at Scarborough Railway Station

Scarborough Railway Station is about a 14-minute walk or 3-minute drive from Green Gables Hotel. Once in town, you can continue on foot toward the centre or use the station as a point to orient yourself before heading for the bays.

Walking between the bays and town centre

Walking between the bays and town centre

The walk between North Bay and South Bay takes around 30 minutes along Royal Albert Drive, around the castle headland. It is a steady, flat route, making it a straightforward way to connect the two seafronts on foot.

For a longer outing, North Yorkshire Council’s Castle Trail covers 2.3 miles and has a 200-foot incline. It passes Peasholm Pagodas, Scarborough Castle, St. Mary’s Church, the Butter Cross, the Grand Hotel, Spa Bridge and the Spa. Scarborough Castle occupies the headland between the bays, so the trail brings together the coast and central landmarks.

Peasholm Park sits in North Bay, a few minutes’ walk from the beach. Peasholm Lake surrounds a tree-covered island reached by a bridge and a winding path; the Peasholm Park visitor guide covers the park in more detail.

Using local buses and the bus station

In summer, an open-top bus runs daily between The Sands and The Spa. You can use it to connect the two bay areas without walking the route around the castle headland. Check the operator’s information for current service details before setting out.

Parking and access considerations

Parking and access considerations

North Bay parking options include Northstead Upper, Northstead Lower and Scalby Mills, as well as pay-and-display parking along Royal Albert Drive. These choices sit around the bay and coastal drive, useful starting points for a walk or a visit to the castle headland.

At Scarborough Castle, the main access crosses grass, cobbles and some bound gravel. Steps lead to the Castle Keep, but alternative routes can avoid them; English Heritage recommends a strong pusher for wheelchair users.

Tramper hire is available through the site, with booking by telephone or email. Disabled parking is limited, on grass, and must be reserved by calling 01723 372451.

For public toilets in North Bay, the Beach Management Centre on North Promenade has pay-on-entry facilities, including a changing places toilet. English Heritage identifies the nearest changing places toilet to the castle at St. Nicholas Gardens on Foreshore Road.

Getting back to Green Gables Hotel

From Scarborough town centre, the walk back to Green Gables Hotel takes about 20 minutes, or around 6 minutes by car. If you finish your day farther along the coast, Peasholm Park is about 29 minutes on foot or 6 minutes by car from the hotel.

Before you go: opening hours, services and access arrangements can change, so check the official site before you go. For Scarborough Castle, use English Heritage’s official site.
